No matter what home decor type catalog, website or magazine you look at right now you’ll find cozy pillows filling sofas up. Cozy sweater pillows made with soft knits, plaids & materials that make you want to melt into your sofa with a cup of cocoa!
I was so excited when Too Cheap Blondes let me tag along on a shopping day & helped me search for sweaters for this project in particular (and some others to come soon…). One of my FAVORITE thrift store chains in Houston is the Family Thrift Center, we visited the Family Thrift Center Outlet in Almeda. And quickly I piled up some cozy sweater to get my sofa cushions ready for fall.
Making pillow covers cost MUCH less then buying them. Let’s just take a look at two I saw that inspired me to just DIY these easy peasy covers! First one is from Nordstroms & the second from Pottery Barn…with matching price tags! Oh goodness. Four pillow would cost me $150+?
Well with a handful of sweaters I was ready to start cutting. What I usually do is cut off right under the armpits, stitch up one end, slip the pillow & stitch out the other. This time I decided to do pillows with different sides so I cut squares similar to the size of the pillows. LUCKILY making cozy pillows is usually forgiving & even the most inexperienced of a seamstress can do this easy project.
I only used 3 sweaters & a button down plaid shirt, which each cost me $2/piece at the Family Thrift Center Outlet!! That is less than 10% of what you’d pay retail for these pillow covers!! Don’t mind all the little fur balls everywhere, some of the sweaters can get a bit messy when cutting them up 😉
TIPS ON CHOOSING SWEATERS:
- The bigger the better! The men’s section is a gold mine!
- Is it soft? Would you want to lay on it, after all it will be on your sofa.
- Holes & stains can be fine…can you cut away the area?
