I am so excited to share these DIY hexagon shelves that I’ve been in love with & have seen all over the internet but anything I could buy wasn’t deep enough for me. I wanted to be able to stick 6″ pots into each nook, so I came up with the idea of these oversized hexagon shelves so I’d have an excuse to buy more plants! LOL Let’s get started on this simple DIY but we’ve also put them up on our shop in case you aren’t up for DIYing, we’d love to create them FOR you!

Tools Needed to make Hexagon Shelves

  • Miter Saw
  • Electric sander
  • Nail Gun
  • Tape Measure

Supplies for Hexagon shelves

  • 1- 1x6x8 pine board (you can pick boards that are a different width than 6″ but I wanted to be able to put pots on them)
  • Wood glue
  • Painter’s tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain or paint (we used Puritan Pine)
  • Sawtooth picture hangers

Steps to make Hexagon Shelves

STEP 1: CUT BOARDS

We cut each piece to be 8″ on the long side (adjust to what size you’re looking to achieve). Each board should be cut at a 30-degree angle & angles should be running opposite directions on the ends.

To get consistent cuts that are the same size you can clamp a board to your miter saw as a guide.

STEP 2: ASSEMBLE

To start assembling we taped our boards into a place of how they were to be assembled by using blue painter’s tape & then flipped the boards over so that the tape is facing down.

Glue the edges of your boards together fully, we did a line of glue & used our little glue brush to smooth it all over the edge (you can also use your finger).

Flip the boards to stand up & fold your edges together into a hexagon, make sure the seams are tight & when the glue is drying use your nail gun to run two brad nails through the angled side of the joint and into the straight run of the other board.

STEP 3: SAND

Once the glue is dry, remove all your tape & give everything a good sanding (I used 120 grit sandpaper) to get rid of any stray wood/splinters and glue drips.

STEP 4: STAIN OR PAINT

Stain or paint your shelves to give them a customized look.

STEP 5: HANG YOUR SHELVES

Nail sawtooth picture hangers to the back top of each shelf & then they are ready to hang on your wall!
